More Revelers Partied, Stayed Longer; 170 Held

July 06, 2001

Police said they arrested about 170 Fourth of July revelers, compared to last year's 156.

"Most of the arrests were alcohol-related," Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steven Schulman said, "though we did have some arrests for assaults, illegal fireworks and that sort of thing."

By Thursday afternoon, most of those arrested had been released without being charged or had made bail, according to Schulman.

"This year's numbers were not significantly larger than last year's," Schulman said of the arrests, "but we did have a significantly larger crowd and they stayed longer than they did the previous year, which made things a little difficult."
