Leader's Ex-Aide Slain Hours Before Testimony

July 07, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Zambian President Frederick Chiluba's former campaign manager was shot dead hours before he was scheduled to testify in a corruption case against three Cabinet ministers.

Paul Tembo, 41, who had joined the opposition in a bid to unseat his former boss, was killed at home in front of his family, his lawyers said.

Tembo was due to provide evidence at a tribunal investigating Finance Minister Katele Kalumba, Home Affairs Minister Peter Machungwa and Works and Supply Minister Godden Mandandi--all trusted Chiluba aides--for alleged corruption and abuse of office.
