Canoe Rides in Utah, Fishing in South Africa


Moki Mac River Expeditions floats the Colorado and Green rivers in Utah and Arizona every day of the summer, but this year it is offering a 52-mile adults-only canoe trip down the Green River. Dates available include Sept. 4 to 9, 11 to 16, 18 to 23, and 25 to 30.

These trips will depart from Mineral Canyon, outside Green River, Utah, and proceed for four days downriver. On the morning of the fifth day, guests will transfer to rafts to run Cataract Canyon at the confluence of the Green and Colorado rivers. Lake Powell is the final destination. Guests will get a scenic flight back to Green River.

Moki Mac will provide the canoes, guides and equipment as well as prepare the meals. Guests need bring only sleeping bags, tents and personal gear.

South Africa: Fishing

A Sept. 20-to-Oct. 3 tour of South Africa takes you to see the wineries, the lions, the elephants and the stunning scenery but also weaves in fly-fishing. Stops for anglers include the Walkerson Estate in Dullstroom (for trout), Pongolapoort Lake (with tiger fish, kurper, catfish and bass), St. Lucia Wetland Park (for salmon, kob, grunter, perch, bream and shad), the Himeville Trout Fishing Club and the Drakensberg Mountains (for trout and bass).

Cost: $2,096 per person, double occupancy, for 12 nights' lodging, 10 breakfasts, a lunch, four dinners, airport transfers and land transport. Air fare is extra.

Europe: War Sites

Extra departures--Aug. 5, Sept. 11 and Sept. 25--have been added to the 16-day World War II Memorial Tour conducted by Image Tours of Grand Rapids, Mich. Beginning in Amsterdam and ending in Paris, the excursion stops include: the "Bridge Too Far" near Arnhem (Netherlands); Battle of the Bulge sites in Belgium; the Remagen bridge, Nuremberg and Berchtesgaden in Germany; Verdun, France (yes, World War I); and the Normandy beaches in France.

Cost: $2,960 (Aug. 5), $2,880 (Sept. 11) and $2,760 (Sept. 25) per person, double occupancy, including air fare from New York, 14 nights in hotels, daily continental breakfast and eight dinners, and guide services.

Ireland: Music

Irish pub music is the focus of a tour to Ireland from Sept. 17 to 27 hosted by Marie Egeland, a music therapist, who will take travelers to lively pubs with bands along the back roads of the countryside. The tour visits the Dingle Peninsula, Killarney in County Kerry, Galway and the Connemara Peninsula, Burren and County Clare to see the Cliffs of Moher.

Cost: $1,899 per person, including ground transportation, a guide and a driver, all accommodations and full Irish breakfast, three dinners and entrances to all attractions. This small-group tour is limited to 12 persons. Air fare is extra.

Indiana: Racing

Auto racing fans can start gearing up for the 2001 Indianapolis Formula One on a tour that runs from Sept. 28 to 30. The tour includes Friday and Saturday tickets to F1 qualifying and Speedway festivities, a pre-race dinner party with celebrity racing drivers, and a police-escorted coach to reserved seats for Sunday's F1 race.

Three nights will be spent in an all-suites hotel, with full breakfast, evening snacks and beverages included.

Italy: Photography

Gothic architecture, stunning landscapes, archeological sites and medieval hill towns are an F-stop away on a tour of Italy from Sept. 12 to Oct. 3 with travel photographer Michele Burgess.

Highlights include Milan, fashion capital of Italy; the isolated coastal villages of the Cinque Terre; the Leaning Tower of Pisa; the historic treasures of Rome; the well-preserved remains of ancient Herculaneum and Pompeii; Positano and the lovely Amalfi Coast; the countryside of Umbria; the medieval towns of Tuscany; Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance; the mosaic churches of Ravenna; and Venice.
