San Marino Rejects Ban on Loud Mowers

July 12, 2001

The San Marino City Council on Wednesday rejected an ordinance that would have outlawed the use of motorized garden equipment on weekends and public holidays, after hearing opposition from gardeners and residents.

The ordinance had been suggested by San Marino resident Alan Talt to end the noise generated by blowers, weed whackers and mowers through the weekend. Saturday mornings would have been exempted.

But Councilman Vincent Filutze said, "The less government involvement we have the better.

"Talk to your neighbor," he told proponents who don't like the noise coming from nearby homes. Though proponents argued the law would have provided peace and quiet, gardeners said it would hurt business, force them to charge residents more and give the city a NIMBY image.
