Students to Be Moved During Site's Cleanup

July 13, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

Students of a Cudahy elementary school that sits atop a former landfill will be transferred to a nearby facility for several months while their school site is cleansed of contaminants, school officials announced Thursday.

The plan has met with approval from most parents who long suspected that Park Avenue Elementary School posed a health hazard for teachers and children. Los Angeles Unified School District officials opted to excavate the site instead of an unpopular alternative--monitoring the site for contaminants.

The students will be transferred to a new school in Bell that is expected to be completed next year. After the estimated six-month cleanup period, the new school will be used to ease overcrowding at other nearby campuses.
