Human Skull Found in Remote Ravine

July 13, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

Volunteers searching a steep Grimes Canyon ravine for any sign of a missing Moorpark woman found a human skull, authorities said Thursday.

The coroner's office has identified the remains, but would not release the name until relatives in Los Angeles and Orange County are notified.

Volunteers had fanned out across rugged terrain between Moorpark and Fillmore looking for signs of Megan Barroso, who disappeared July 5. They discovered the skull about 200 feet below Grimes Canyon Road, said Senior Deputy Ed Tumbleson.

A tan-colored van was wedged upside down in a ravine about 100 feet from the skull, Tumbleson said.

"This is a location where we have found bodies in the past," Tumbleson said. "It's remote and not heavily traveled and people think they can get away with dumping bodies here."
