Water Well Reopens With Treatment System

The Valley | IN BRIEF / HAWAIIAN GARDENS

July 18, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

Officials on Tuesday reopened a Hawaiian Gardens water well that had been closed for eight years because of the presence of manganese and arsenic.

The Juan Well Arsenic Water Treatment Facility was dedicated by the Hawaiian Gardens City Council and representatives from the Southern California Water Co. and Central Basin Municipal Water District.

Officials said the treatment system is among the first in California for removing manganese and among the first full-scale installations in the country for removing arsenic.

The well will serve about 48,000 residents in Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens, portions of Lakewood and Long Beach.
