City Council Is Stunned by Mayor's Resignation

July 20, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

City Council members said Thursday they were still trying to understand why Mayor Janice Lee had abruptly resigned from the council during a meeting the night before.

The panel had just tackled its first agenda item Wednesday when an agitated Lee announced she was quitting and stormed out.

Lee, who could not be reached for comment, won her council seat in March 1999. The largely ceremonial mayor's job rotates among the council members.

On Wednesday, Lee had barely opened the council session when Councilmen Michael Harrison and Dennis Washburn got into a heated discussion about a BMW dealership. The exchange seemed to upset Lee.

The council voted 4-0 Wednesday--after Lee had gone--to approve the dealership's plans to move to the city.
