Tips on Healthy Ways to Remodel

July 22, 2001

"A Guide for Healthier Home Remodeling" is available at no charge through the American Lung Assn. Health House project and 3M.

The booklet outlines general tips on improving the quality of indoor air during home renovations.

Indoor air pollution is one of the five most urgent environmental risks to public health, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The levels of air pollution inside the home can be as much as 100 times higher than outdoors.

Sanding, sawing, painting and putting up drywall release dust and other tiny particles into the air.

Biological contaminants from insects and rodents that are present in walls and ceilings also may be released during remodeling.

The booklet and a companion publication, "A Guide for Creating a Healthier Home," may be obtained by phoning (800) 388-3458.
