The Benefits of Wealth

July 22, 2001

Jonathan Kandell's "A Gentleman's London" (July 8) was interesting and well written, giving a taste of the better life. But I cannot wait to see an avalanche of letters from readers chastising the editor for printing such "extravagant debauchery."

What bothers me is that the writer apologizes to such anticipated criticism by indicating that he cannot afford such things (buying a shirt instead of a suit, and having a $42 tea that will last him until breakfast).

If I could afford it, I would fly first class or rent a private jet, and stay in the best hotels. And would I apologize? No!
