Christie's Son to Plead Again for Bail Reduction

July 26, 2001|From a Times Staff Writer

A state appeals court will hear arguments next month on whether bail should be lowered for the 25-year-old son of Hells Angels leader George Christie Jr.

George Christie III is charged in a broad drug-and-racketeering case involving alleged drug sales to minors by members and associates of the Ventura chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.

Christie has been held in lieu of $1-million bail for the past five months and his requests for reduced bail have been denied.

Last week, his criminal defense attorney, Rick Loftus, appealed the matter to the 2nd District Court of Appeal in Ventura.

Loftus contends that Christie's bail is excessive, violates his constitutional rights and should be significantly lowered.

"We are asking that the bail be set at . . . $100,000," Loftus said.

The appellate court recently ordered bail lowered for Christie's mother, Cheryl, but declined to consider his father's similar appeal.

Cheryl, George Jr., George III and sister Moriya Christie are all charged in connection with the alleged narcotics ring.

The son's appellate court hearing is set for Aug. 9.
