July 31, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

Ten people, including former state Senate President Pro Tem David Roberti, have been certified to run for the seat held for 35 years by late Councilman John Ferraro, elections officials said Monday.

In addition to Roberti, the others qualifying for the ballot are Community College Board member Beth Garfield, council gadfly "Melrose" Larry Green, Hollywood neighborhood activist Richard L. MacMinn, environmentalist Denise Munro Robb, teacher Susan Fong, public interest attorney Mike Schaefer, community activist Ferris Wehbe, community organizer Linda Lockwood, and former Ferraro aide Tom LaBonge.

The special election in the 4th Council District--which stretches from Hancock Park to North Hollywood--will be held Sept. 11. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the top two vote-getters will face each other in a runoff Oct. 23.
