Twin Teen Rebel Leaders May Be Headed to U.S.

June 03, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Johnny and Luther Htoo, twins who fought Myanmar troops as boys in the jungle, may be headed for a new life in the United States, a senior provincial official said.

The twins, thought to be between 13 and 15--even their mother says she isn't sure how old they are--have reportedly begun procedures for resettlement in the U.S., along with their parents and followers of a rebel group known as God's Army.

The boys, believed by some to have magical powers, had acquired near-legendary status as leaders of an offshoot of the Karen National Union, an ethnic minority insurgent group that has been battling the central government in Myanmar, formerly Burma, for decades.
