Algebra Solution

June 10, 2001

"Stumped by the X Factor" (June 6) bemoaned the fact that students, parents and teachers are desperate to know how to learn and teach algebra, especially when trained teachers are scarce.

Easy. Use TV. The Los Angeles Unified School District has televised in past years special subjects: science, mathematics, art, music, etc. Start this distance education.

There are many expert mathematics teachers in the district. Select some from this cadre, then televise their classes each day from the beginning of the semester for after-school showing. This would be helpful to students, parents and other teachers.
