June 13, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Surgeons operated on former Indonesian President Suharto and implanted a cardiac pacemaker, a doctor said today.

The 30-minute procedure was ordered a day after Suharto, 80, was admitted to Jakarta's Pertamina Hospital with low blood pressure and an irregular heartbeat.

"He is stable. The operation was a success. But there could always be complications," said Miftah Suryadipraja, a doctor at the hospital. "He will stay in the hospital for two or three more days for observation."
