Sparks Tonight

June 21, 2001|Mike Terry

AT HOUSTON, 5 PDT, ESPN

Site--Compaq Center.

Radio--KWKU (1220).

Records--Sparks 9-0, Comets 5-1.

Record vs. Comets--1-0.

Update--In the WNBA season opener on Memorial Day, the Sparks beat the Comets, who were receiving their fourth consecutive championship rings. Houston, which trails Los Angeles by 2 1/2 games in the Western Conference standings, is eyeing a rematch in the playoffs. Then again, Houston wants to play anybody. Heavy rains flooded out the Compaq Center two weeks ago, forcing the Comets to postpone their last four home games. They haven't played since beating Phoenix on June 10. Houston forward (and former USC star) Tina Thompson is having an excellent season, averaging 22.8 points and nine rebounds. Spark center Lisa Leslie had her fourth double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds in Tuesday's victory over Charlotte.
