Rabid Skunk Outbreak Controlled in Arizona

THE NATION | IN BRIEF / AND FINALLY . . .

June 29, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Health authorities, faced with an unprecedented rabies outbreak in northern Arizona, have captured and vaccinated 114 skunks and declared the six-week vaccination program a success.

Federal and local wildlife agents trapped 133 skunks.

Of those, 114 were vaccinated and released and 19 killed to test for rabies. None was rabid.

"We hoped to create herd immunity--just like we do with children's vaccinations," said Mira Leslie, a veterinarian at the Arizona Department of Health Services.
