About 2,000 Madurese settlers boarded a navy ship in Sampit on Indonesia's part of Borneo island to flee a deadly two-week rampage by Dayak warriors.
"The government will do all it can to bring the settlers back to Sampit as soon as possible, but for now our priority is their safety," Sampit district chief M. Wahyudi Anwar said. Nearly 500 ethnic Madurese have been killed and an estimated 80,000 have been forced from their homes, officials say.
