Electricity: Utility companies' rebates for those who install panels to harness the sun's rays generate increased interest in the systems, especially for heating water.

Getting solar to pay off in the pocketbook is probably the key to its future, said Ted Bavin, owner of All Valley Solar in Hollywood.

"There are a few fanatics who go solar because it's the right thing to do, and they are probably wealthy," he said. "For the rest of us, it's an economic decision."
