Students Protest Syrian Role in Nation

March 15, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Lebanese students took to the streets to demand an end to Syria's military and political dominance of their nation.

"We want to speak the truth! We cannot bear Syria!" shouted the approximately 3,000 students who marched out of Lebanese University in Beirut, the capital. Lebanese forces were deployed in Beirut in anticipation of protests to mark 1989's failed "liberation war" by Maronite Christian army Gen. Michel Aoun against Syria.
