Fishermen Find 124 Bodies in River

World IN BRIEF / GUINEA

March 19, 2001

Guinean fishermen have found at least 124 decomposing bodies believed to be those of rebels killed during a clash with government forces at the town of Nongoa on March 9, army sources said.

The sources said the bodies were found in the Makona River, which runs along part of the border between Guinea and Sierra Leone, by a group of men on a night fishing expedition.

Combat fatigues and Russian-made automatic rifles were found on some of the bodies, they said.
