Eagles, Chargers Climb Rankings

March 20, 2001|MELANIE NEFF

A victory over Villa Park was all it took to catapult the Santa Margarita and Edison boys' teams up through the county rankings this week.

Santa Margarita beat then third-ranked Villa Park on Tuesday, 113-57, and Edison knocked off the Spartans on Thursday, 103-67.

As a result, Santa Margarita moved from No. 5 to No. 2 in the coaches' poll, and Edison jumped from No. 7 to No. 4. The Spartans dropped to No. 8.

RECORD START

The Garden Grove boys' swim team is off its best start in more than five years.

The Argonauts are 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Garden Grove League, and in their first two league meets, they have upset the two favorites, Pacifica and La Quinta.

LOOKING AHEAD

South Coast League swimming opens today with some key matchups, as San Clemente hosts Capistrano Valley and Mission Viejo visits Dana Hills.

On Wednesday the Century League has Canyon swimming at Foothill. The county's best meet is at Heritage Park, where Irvine hosts Newport Harbor.

The CIF boys' relays are Thursday and Saturday at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach. The finals are at 7 p.m. Saturday.
