Ramirez, Waves Go for Two Against USC

March 21, 2001|JOHN KLIMA

Pitcher Greg Ramirez of Pepperdine will try to beat USC for the second time this season when he starts today against the Trojans at Dedeaux Field in a 5 p.m. game between nationally ranked teams.

Ramirez, a sophomore right-hander, got the victory in Pepperdine's 5-3 defeat of the Trojans last month in Malibu. The Rio Mesa High graduate allowed six hits and three runs in seven innings.

Ramirez, 1-1 with a 3.14 earned-run average, has continued to establish himself as a dependable pitcher. A reliever for weekend West Coast Conference games, he has emerged as a steady weekday starter for the No. 13 Waves (16-7).

No. 9 USC (15-10) will counter with sophomore right-hander Chad Clark (2-2, 6.17).
