March 22, 2001

Aibo, which means "companion" in Japanese, is a robotic dog made by Sony Corp. that is programmed to learn on its own. Owners train the foot-long robot to respond to more than 40 verbal commands, including its own name. The robot can simulate six emotions, including joy and anger, and will become lethargic if neglected. With 20 motors, it can walk as far as 20 feet in a minute. Starting price: $1,500.
