College Tuition Fees

March 25, 2001

* Mexico's President Vicente Fox wants Mexican migrants to receive in-state tuition rates at California's colleges (March 22). But we already spend a fortune educating Mexican children at the primary level. While immigrants have grown to over a quarter of the state's population, they give birth to 45% of the state's children. We spend billions building new schools to accommodate school overcrowding.

Fox cites the contributions of Mexicans to California. Unfortunately, as immigration has increased in recent decades, it contributes less to our economy and more to overpopulation. The quarter of our population who immigrated here contribute to our shortages of energy, water and affordable housing. Just think how much better off we would be with only three-quarters of our current population. It's time to stop doing favors for foreigners and educate our own children.
