THE OSCARS | ARRIVALS

Stars Called on the Carpet

March 26, 2001

The Oscar broadcast from the Shrine Auditorium begins each year as a loud, chaotic few hours that are part homecoming, part couture runway and all photo-op. As the celebs snake their way from Joan to Roger to Sam and into the show, the bleacher crowd screams at key sightings (Laura Linney and Angelina Jolie were favorites this year). Greetings are called, air kisses exchanged, designers' names yelled out. Spirits are high; no one has lost yet. But after Sunday night, the Shrine's broad avenue of red carpet passes into Oscar history: The new Hollywood Boulevard venue is slated to debut next year.
