New Orleans Asked to Change Term Limits Law

March 26, 2001|Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor Marc Morial is asking voters to change the city's term limits law so he can run for reelection.

Morial, who was elected in 1994 and reelected in 1998, said he would try to help the city's schools if allowed to run next year.

The city charter limits the mayor to two consecutive terms, but a group of Morial's supporters is circulating a petition to put the term limit issue on the ballot before the mayoral election. They would need to collect 10,000 signatures from registered voters to hold a vote on the issue.
