No matter how old or young you are, it feels wonderful to sing out loud. Even if you don't sing all the right notes or words, it's a great way to express yourself.
Most popular songs are made up of two elements: lyrics (words) and music. Someone who writes the words to a song is called a lyricist. Many lyricists write the music as well as the words; others may choose to work with a songwriter--someone who specializes in writing only the music part.
Greggy Dee is a well-known storyteller and songwriter who works with a lyricist named Rosalind Memel. They have been writing children's songs for 10 years and are very flexible with how they collaborate, or work together. For example, if Memel writes a silly poem or story, Dee may create fast, happy music for it. Or if Dee writes a slow pretty tune, then Memel might add emotional or dreamy lyrics to fit the music.
It is fun to listen to song lyrics. They can be about anything. Some rhyme or tell a story while others ask questions or are simply entertaining.
Create Your Own Lyrics
Start by humming the tune to a song you already know, like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Then make up new words to match the song. They can be about a new kitten, aliens from outer space or even safety rules. You can also add sounds instead of words. Remember, when you make up a song, anything goes!
You're invited to play musical instruments, then sing along with Greggy Dee at the Pasadena Symphony's free Musical Circus for children this Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. For information, call (626) 793-7172 or visit http://www.pasadenasymphony.org.
