High School Baseball Roundup

March 31, 2001|From Staff Reports

San Fernando 4, Poly 2--Jess Moreno's clutch pitching and hitting lifted the Tigers (10-2) in an emotional first-round game of the Birmingham tournament.

Moreno relieved starter Abraham Gonzalez (5-0) with none out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth after Poly (5-4-1) scored a run to pull within 4-2. Moreno escaped with two strikeouts and a botched suicide squeeze.

Moreno had two more strikeouts in the seventh and earned a save. His leadoff double started a two-run rally in the sixth, when San Fernando took a 4-1 lead.

It was the first time Poly had faced Gonzalez since the senior right-hander transferred from Poly to San Fernando before his junior year. Adding to the intense atmosphere were injuries that sent two players to the hospital.

First baseman Jesus Martinez of San Fernando sustained a broken collarbone when he collided with Poly's Zack Sims on a pop-up in the first inning, Poly Coach Chuck Schwal said.

Eddie Baeza, Poly's top pitcher, went to the hospital for observation after being struck in the head by a Gonzalez pitch in the sixth, Schwal said.

Chaminade 6, Crespi 2--Bobby Paschal struck out seven and pitched a five-hitter in a Mission League victory at Valley College.

Jimmy Milkovich doubled twice and finished with four hits and two runs batted in for Chaminade (7-2, 5-0).

Alemany 4, Notre Dame 3--Nick Petrucci drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning for the Indians (7-5-1, 1-1-1) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame (5-5-1, 2-3-1).

Valencia 10, Canyon 4--Joey Morelli had a three-run double and the Vikings (8-4, 3-2) won a Foothill League game at Valencia that was called after six innings because of darkness.

Westlake 7, Simi Valley 5--Luke Riordan's two-out, bases-loaded triple in the seventh lifted visiting Westlake (8-3-1, 3-1-1) in a Marmonte League game.

Royal 11, Newbury Park 1--Ryan Keys went three for three with two doubles and three runs for Royal (11-2, 3-1) in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park.

Village Christian 6, Paraclete 4--Casey Fritts went four for four and drove in the winning run with a double in the seventh for the Crusaders (9-1, 2-0) in an Alpha League game at Paraclete.

Calabasas 6, Santa Paula 2--Evan Tuchman hit a two-run double and John Henry Jacobs (1-1) pitched three innings of hitless relief for the Coyotes (8-3, 4-0) in a Frontier League game at Santa Paula.
