California Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer will present a $4.2-million check from European life insurance companies to Holocaust survivors in Los Angeles on Thursday. It is believed to be the first such payout anywhere in the world.
The check will be used to start the California Humanitarian Foundation for Holocaust Survivors. About 20,000 Holocaust survivors live in the state.
The money is from three Dutch insurers that sold life insurance policies to people who became Holocaust victims. It will be distributed to financially needy survivors.
