Report Urges Better Morgue Facilities

November 02, 2001|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Conditions at morgues in the Bay Area vary from pristine to appalling, and an Alameda County Grand Jury report has underscored the need for improvements at many facilities.

Grand jury foreman Sherry Smith urged county supervisors to replace the morgue in Oakland as soon as possible.

Inadequate ventilation allows the smell of decomposing bodies to waft into the lunch area, the grand jury found. And the city's morgue is ill equipped to deal with casualties from a major disaster because it lacks refrigeration space.
