HUD Discrimination Protection Deemed Lax

November 06, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Federal housing authorities have failed to suitably enforce laws protecting the disabled from discrimination, an independent federal agency concluded.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development ruled out discrimination in all but 2.4% of more than 12,000 complaints between 1988 and 2000, a National Council on Disability report found.

By 2000, HUD was taking an average of 14 months, almost four times more than the prescribed legal cap, to complete investigations, the report said.
