Age Breakdown Does a Disservice

November 07, 2001

Writer Kathy Bryant's attempt to pinpoint the stages of aging, admittedly a difficult task, missed the mark ("They're Moving On Up," Oct. 18). Bryant says there are three stages of retirement--55-plus ("active"), 65-plus ("independent, but with some care needs") and 70-to 100-plus ("semi-independent, but with more health-care and service needs").

Bryant's breakdown does a disservice to most people in their 70s, and many in their 80s who are still active and largely self-sufficient.

Perhaps Bryant should have listed four or five stages, instead of lumping 70-year-olds in with 103-year-olds.
