Bodies of 9 Kursk Sailors Are Buried

November 07, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Nine bodies removed from the wreckage of the Kursk nuclear submarine were buried in the dead sailors' hometowns--eight in the western city of Kursk and one in the Volga River city of Nizhny Novgorod.

The submarine exploded and sank Aug. 12, 2000, during maneuvers in the Barents Sea, killing its entire crew of 118. It was lifted from the sea floor in a $130-million salvage effort and moved to a dry dock last month.

Investigators have pulled 56 bodies from the Kursk since it was raised, and 51 have been identified. Twelve other bodies were removed by divers last year.
