Thousands Rally, Accuse WTO of Bias in Its Rules

November 07, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Tens of thousands of people, many of them farmers, rallied in New Delhi, accusing the World Trade Organization of having rules that favor developed nations.

The protesters in the Indian capital demanded that the government withdraw from the WTO if the trade group launches a new round of global talks.

The U.S. and the European Union hope to get developing countries to agree to new negotiations at a WTO meeting that will begin Friday in Qatar's capital, Doha.

India has expressed its reservations, saying the developed countries have yet to fulfill commitments made in previous talks.
