McKinney Commits to UCLA

Matt McKinney, a 6-foot-8 basketball and volleyball standout from Santa Ynez High, said Wednesday he has accepted a basketball scholarship to UCLA.

McKinney is considered among the nation's top young volleyball players but believes he can be equally successful in basketball once he devotes his full attention to the sport.

He averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds in basketball last season and helped Santa Ynez win a third consecutive Division III volleyball championship. He'll play volleyball at UCLA only after basketball season....

Thomas Shewmake, a 6-10 center from Cathedral City, has committed to Cal State Northridge.... Guard Britney Hamilton of Chatsworth has committed to the University of Richmond....

Alex Merricks, a left-handed pitcher at Moorpark High who is considered one of the hardest throwers in Ventura County, has committed to Arizona State.... Josh Bartusick, a first baseman and pitcher at Fountain Valley, has committed to Cal State Fullerton....

Carling Cho of Dana Point Dana Hills, the 2000 Orange County girls' golfer of the year, has committed to San Jose State....

Matthew Malele, a 6-3, 285-pound junior defensive tackle from Carson, doesn't have to make a college decision until February 2003 but said he's looking seriously at UCLA and could be offered a scholarship this weekend, when he attends the Bruins' game against Oregon at the Rose Bowl.... Linebacker Oscar Lua of Indio has been offered a scholarship by USC but still intends to take several recruiting visits to other schools, Coach Ovideo Machado said....

Volleyball player Tyler Caldwell, who plays at Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, has committed to Long Beach State.
