City to Observe Holiday for Martin Luther King

November 09, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

The Redding City Council voted to observe the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday for the first time.

The City Council made the decision this week after being petitioned for years by civil rights and community groups to follow the country's lead. The day was first celebrated as a federal holiday in 1986.

Assistant City Manager Phil Perry said that beginning in 2002, Redding will commemorate the birthday of the slain civil rights leader on the third Monday of January. All official buildings will close and only essential city services will operate.
