Fremont Forfeits Win Over Crenshaw

November 09, 2001|Gary Klein

Fremont High's football team must forfeit its Coliseum League victory over Crenshaw for using an ineligible player, Barbara Fiege, the City Section's director of athletics, said on Thursday. Fremont defeated Crenshaw, 27-19, last Friday. The victory had put Fremont in position to possibly receive the top seed for the playoffs.

The forfeit drops Fremont to 7-1, 3-1 in league play. Crenshaw is 7-0, 4-0. If Crenshaw defeats Locke today, the Cougars will win their third consecutive league title. The winner of the game between Fremont and Dorsey (5-3, 3-1) would finish in second place.

Fiege said the Fremont player was not on the school's eligibility roster submitted before the season. The player became eligible before last week's game and the proper paperwork was filed on his behalf, Fiege said. But the player participated in the game without having practiced for 10 days, violating a California Interscholastic Federation rule, Fiege said.

The selection committee for the City playoffs meets Saturday morning at Manual Arts to seed teams for the Championship and Invitational divisions. Eight league champions and eight at-large teams will be selected for the Championship division. Teams rated 17-32 will participate in the Invitational division.

First-round games will be played Thursday, quarterfinals Nov. 21, semifinals Nov. 30 and championship games in both divisions Dec. 7 at the Coliseum.
