Memories of a Boat Trip

November 11, 2001

Your Oct. 7 article "Lazy Days in Southern France" brought back nostalgic memories of sailing France's Canal du Midi in 1991.

My husband and I had rented a small live-aboard boat for the first two weeks of the season. The first week, the boat performed disastrously; the boat company's engineer had to come and fix it.

The second week was trouble-free and a joy. We chugged through the countryside, stopping at villages that time forgot, buying fresh baguettes three times a day, going to open-air markets and wandering the cobblestone streets.

At the end of the voyage, the boat company refunded our first week's rental and gave us a certificate for a free week's rental. Unfortunately my husband died before we managed to fit that trip in. Wherever my husband, Eric, is, I am sure he spends a lot of time at the helm of a boat. All he is missing is his lifetime first mate--me.
