Big Changes Likely From Election Oversight Panel

November 17, 2001

The city's elections department, under fire for delays in the counting of results from elections earlier this month, faces extensive changes.

On Nov. 6, 63% of voters approved Proposition E, a measure that creates a new seven-member commission to run the department and hire a director.

The new commission will replace a system that has produced five directors in as many years and is under investigation by the secretary of state. That could mean the newest elections chief, Tammy Haygood, could be replaced by the new panel.
