WAR FRONT

Northern Alliance forces move into Kunduz, the Taliban's last stronghold in northern Afghanistan, as defectors pour out of the city and surrendered weapons.

FOREIGN FIGHTERS

It is unclear whether the advance on Kunduz follows an agreement on the surrender of non-Afghan Taliban fighters who are considered to be the Taliban's hard-liners. "They want to fight to the death," a Northern Alliance spokesman says.

NEGOTIATIONS

A senior Taliban official slips into Pakistan to consult with Afghan community leaders in what is described as part of a broad-based initiative to surrender the Taliban spiritual center of Kandahar.

ANTHRAX

About 250 people gather in an Oxford, Conn., church to remember Ottilie W. Lundgren, 94, who is the nation's fifth anthrax victim in recent weeks. Investigators still can't find clues to how she got the disease.
