Early Vote Mandated by Peace Deal Is Postponed

November 28, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

The speaker of Macedonia's parliament canceled a vote on dissolving the chamber, thereby postponing an early general election required under a peace accord with ethnic Albanian guerrillas.

Under August's pact, the early vote had been set for Jan. 27.

Parliament must dissolve two months before an election. But most lawmakers said they would vote against the January date because of delays in reestablishing state authority in rebel-inhabited areas.

President Boris Trajkovski, as well as European Union and NATO officials, also favored putting off the election until at least April.
