County Quashes Plan to Ban Smoking at Home

November 28, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan vetoed legislation that would have regulated smoking in the privacy of people's homes, backpedaling after widespread backlash.

Duncan took the action after the Maryland council was flooded with ridicule and opposition to the indoor-air quality legislation and a key councilman withdrew support.

Had it become law, the legislation would have set fines of up to $750 for people who smoke in their homes, if that smoke crossed property lines and offended neighbors.

Tobacco companies had threatened a legal challenge.
