More Troops Sought to Police Border

November 29, 2001|From Times Wire Reports

The Customs Service has asked for about 100 additional National Guard troops to help police the U.S.-Mexico border.

The request calls for unarmed soldiers to search vehicles for drugs. Customs inspectors would be available for assignments elsewhere. Jay Ahern, Customs Service director of field operations for Southern California, said the agency hopes that freeing inspectors for other duties will ease border wait times.
