Orlando Magic forward Grant Hill has bone spurs on his surgically-repaired left ankle and was advised Wednesday to rest.
The spurs are not related to the ankle injury that sidelined Hill for all but four games last season, Dr. Mark Myerson said from his office in Baltimore.
Myerson performed bone-graft surgery on Hill's ankle in January.
Orlando's next game is at home today against Boston. The team lists Hill's status as day-to-day.
"As a rule, these spurs will respond to a short period of rest and therapy, and do not require surgery," Myerson said.
Hill met with Myerson in Baltimore on Tuesday, and planned to consult with him again over the weekend when the Magic is in Washington to play the Wizards.
Orlando spokesman Joel Glass said that it was premature to speculate on the time Hill will need to recover fully.
Hill sat out the last seven minutes of Orlando's loss to Detroit on Monday night. That came two nights after he was a last-minute scratch against Charlotte.
Charlotte Hornet forward Jamal Mashburn may seek a third medical opinion before deciding what to do about his groin injury, said Bob Bass, team vice president.
"We're still gathering information," Bass said of Mashburn, who has been on the injured list since Nov. 20. "As soon as we get all the information, we'll try to take some course of action, whether it's rest or surgery."
Bass said Mashburn has already seen two doctors in North Carolina.
If Mashburn undergoes surgery, Bass said he didn't know how long the player would be sidelined.
Philadelphia 76er star Allen Iverson signed a lifetime endorsement and marketing contract with Reebok.
The deal is an extension of the 10-year, $50-million deal Iverson signed after being selected by the 76ers with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 draft.
Meanwhile, the 76ers received a salary-cap exception worth just over $4 million from the NBA for forward-center Matt Geiger's career-ending injury.
Geiger announced his retirement last week.
The Washington Wizards activated guard Tyronn Lue and placed forward Tyrone Nesby (back) on the injured list. Lue had a hand injury....The Milwaukee Bucks activated forward Darvin Ham and placed center Greg Foster (back) on the injured list. Ham is coming off preseason knee surgery.
