Safety Report Urged for Red Line, Union Station

October 19, 2001|From Times Staff Reports

Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn asked the Metropolitan Transportation Authority on Thursday to assess the security of the Metro Red Line system and Union Station--second to New York's Penn Station as the largest public transit station in the country.

Hahn, an MTA board member, made the motion during a meeting of the MTA's executive management committee, noting that 30,000 passengers pass through Union Station daily.

The committee approved his motion unanimously, and requested weekly reports about the safety of the transportation hub, along with a formal report in a month.

The MTA will coordinate with the Los Angeles Police Department, the county's Sheriff Department, Amtrak staff and other agencies in determining what additional security precautions may be needed.
