Judge Says Candidate Must Stand Trial

A City Council candidate indicted on two counts of falsifying nomination papers asked a judge Friday to dismiss the charges, but his request was denied.

John Taylor, 51, who lost his November bid for a council seat, said he lived in Yorba Linda, but Deputy District Atty. Ebrahim Baytieh said the candidate actually lives in an unincorporated area.

On Friday, Taylor's attorney said the evidence would not support criminal prosecution. Orange County Superior Court Judge Richard F. Toohey in Santa Ana ruled that the case could proceed.

Taylor's indictment in May followed weeks of investigation by the Orange County district attorney's office. Trial is set for Oct. 22.
