Former Bosnian Serb leader Biljana Plavsic arrived in Belgrade, Yugoslavia's capital, after being temporarily released from U.N. detention pending her genocide trial.
"After eight months, I'm back on our soil," Plavsic, 71, told reporters, choking back tears. She arrived on a flight from Amsterdam.
Plavsic was granted provisional release by the U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague on Aug. 29. Judges ruled that she could stay in Serbia, Yugoslavia's dominant republic, until her trial begins next year.
Plavsic, a key deputy to Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic during the 3 1/2-year war in Bosnia-Herzegovina, was the first woman indicted by the tribunal.
