FIRST QUARTER
UCLA 7, Kansas 3
THE SCORING: * Kansas 3, UCLA 0: Johnny Beck 52-yard field goal at 10:18. 10 plays, 23 yards. * UCLA 7, Kansas 3: Cory Paus one-yard run at 2:35. 12 plays, 70 yards. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick).
TURNING POINT: With Kansas at UCLA's 20 and threatening to increase its 3-0 lead, Bruin linebacker Robert Thomas shot up the middle and nailed quarterback Zach Dyer, dropping back on third and 10. Dyer fumbled, and linebacker Ryan Nece recovered at the 30, setting up the touchdown drive.
NOT IN THE SUMMARY: In a big setback for the Jayhawks, Harrison Hill, the leading returning receiver in the Big 12 Conference, sustained a fractured shoulder blade and was knocked out of action early in the quarter. Season firsts for the Bruins: first penalty, first turnover and first catch by Brian Poli-Dixon, second on the team with 53 receptions last season.
STAT WATCH: UCLA's DeShaun Foster ran 11 times for 70 yards, a 6.4-yard average, particularly impressive considering he lost 14 yards on his first carry. The Jayhawks gained 12 yards in 15 carries, a 0.8-yard average.
SECOND QUARTER
THE SCORING: * UCLA 10, Kansas 3: Griffith 31-yard field goal at 12:19. 11 plays, 66 yards. * UCLA 13, Kansas 3: Griffith 36-yard field goal at 8:43. Seven plays, 43 yards. * UCLA 20, Kansas 3: Nece 22-yard interception return at 8:26. PAT--Griffith (kick). * UCLA 27, Kansas 3: Tab Perry, 49-yard pass from Paus at 3:20. 1 play, 49 yards. PAT--Griffith (kick); UCLA 27, Kansas 10: Mario Kinsey two-yard run at :39. 13 plays, 80 yards. PAT--Beck.
TURNING POINT: The Bruin lead grew from 10-3 to 20-3 in a span of 17 seconds. That essentially pushed the mute button on the crowd, which was encouraged early in the game when Kansas' defense made a few plays.
NOT IN THE SUMMARY: A week after leading the team in tackles at Alabama, Nece had a fumble recovery and interception return for a touchdown in the first half. He underwent two shoulder operations during the off-season. The touchdown dive by Kinsey, a redshirt freshman playing in his first game, was set up by a pass-interference call in the end zone by cornerback Joe Hunter.
STAT WATCH: By halftime, Foster had 110 yards in 17 carries, matching his yardage total against Alabama. The Kansas ground game, meanwhile, slipped deeper into the abyss, finishing the half with seven yards in 20 carries.
