University Fraternity, Sorority Are Punished

April 01, 2002|From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A San Diego State University fraternity has been expelled and a sorority placed on suspension after violating campus rules on alcohol abuse at social events.

The Kappa Sigma fraternity's charter was revoked by the group's national leadership after an alleged hazing involving pledges and alcohol, the second such incident in five years. The fraternity has been on campus since 1947.

The Kappa Delta sorority was placed on "indefinite" suspension by its national group because of an alcohol-related incident.

During the suspension sorority activities will be limited and monitored.

San Diego State President Stephen Weber endorsed the punishments in both cases.
